Team Tooney Fishing competing in the 2025 Gold Coast Flathead Classic, anglers on boat battling windy conditions.
The 2025 Gold Coast Flathead Classic is done and dusted — and mate, what a wild ride it was. From glassy mornings to angry afternoon winds, last-minute fuel miracles and Bongo bare-handing his first flatty, this year’s comp gave us the full spectrum of “living the adventure”.
Here’s the official wash-up from Team Tooney Fishing.

Team Results
Anglers: Tooney & Bongo
Final Position: 175th / 238
Total Fish: 9
Total Points: 462
A tough bite, but a weekend full of laughs, chaos and good times with good people.
Day 1 & 2 – Smooth Starts, Rough Finishes
Both mornings were mint — calm water, clean tides, and the optimism you only get at the start of a comp.
But once midday hit… game over.
The wind ripped through, the fish shut down, and the Broadwater turned into a washing machine. We pushed on, threw everything at them, but soft plastics were the only thing consistent.
We ran Holt Productions Prawns the entire comp. They caught fish when nothing else did.
Trolling, which is normally reliable for us, didn’t produce a single bite — super rare, and honestly a bit rude.
Day 3 – The Grind
Day 3 arrived with wind from the get-go. Proper gusts from sunrise, making every cast an adventure in accuracy (or inaccuracy).
We covered serious ground, hid in sheltered corners and eventually pulled one hard-earned flatty from a river system. That fish worked for its airtime.

Chaos, Laughs & Close Calls
Wouldn’t be a Team Tooney comp without a few moments that make you question your life choices.
The Highlights:
Almost launching without the bungs in.
Automatic tradition at this point.
Dropping some big girls at the boat. Still heartbreaking.
The fuel fiasco. Up near Cabbage Tree Point, the gauge was flirting with empty. Somehow we made the 50km back to Paradise Point Marina. Pure divine intervention.
Bongo hand-fishing his first flatty. Zero hesitation. Full bear-mode.10/10 enthusiasm. Technique… pending development.
Beers in the swell: A few “tactical refreshments” went downrange. Hard to neck a can when the ocean wants to send it skyward.
Fishing With Bongo – The Rookie Steps Up

For his first ever fishing comp, Bongo put in a massive effort. He’s always a great bloke to have on the water, but I think he underestimated how intense competition fishing really is.
Not to mention he fished the entire comp using my wife’s rod — iconic.
Event Vibe – Hard Fishing, Great People
The bite was tough across the board, but the Flatty Classic atmosphere was unreal as always. The organisers switched back to a buffet-style dinner instead of food trucks, which was a huge win. Nothing beats loading up with carbs after being belted by wind all day.
Final Thoughts
The scoreboard won’t tell the full story — but the memories do. This comp was all about mateship, grit and good laughs… exactly what Team Tooney Fishing stands for.
And yes, we’ll definitely be back next year — with more fuel, more plastics and hopefully fewer near-death moments.
